I like to play horror as many of you may know, so I am here to post couple of cool creature designs from games that I know or at least comes to my mind. Keep in mind that although I play scary games I tend to be spooked really fast, not going to act tough, I am indeed a soft baby.

I have played almost all of the resident evil games and it has some amazing designs and I present to you for me the creepiest of them all not maybe design wise but how they are and act. 

Rasklapanje

Rasklapanjes can barely walk and are very slow but that’s what makes them so creepy. You can’t kill them cause they regenerate themselves and detaching their body parts which adds to the scariness of them. Usually I love to kill whatever monsters there are in the level so I could roam worry free at the level. With this bastard there, I can’t . They have this weird almost dolphin-like noise and the death animation is so disgusting https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MTzK5kp0ThY they are like humanoid looking  zombie versions of the Xenomorph.

Pale Head

Pale Heads goes to the same category as the previous creature, and one of the reasons it’s scary is that they are hard to kill but the fact that they are growing extra skin is what I found super nasty. Lepotitsa

These go to the category where bloater could be from Last of us, big blob like monster designs that are usually filled with gas. Game wise I am not a fan of gas monsters and they are pretty annoying in my opinion. This particular monster gas turns people to zombies and I feel like the scene was more disturbing than the actual monster. Don’t get me wrong I think that the gas filled skin bags (?) are the grossest thing which is the reason it’s mentioned but at the same time you are trapped in a cathedral trying to save others as this creature is there https://youtu.be/V8yPIDCNfVI. I wouldn’t but Bloater here cause I kinda like the mushroom zombies and I do find them beautiful and adorable in a weird way.  Left pic is the Lepotitsa and below Bloater.

                                                                              

Some honorable mentions from resident evil would be Licker and Lisa Trevor, but we are moving to Evil Within monsters.

Evil Within has some creepy design that I would argue they are scarier in the game than Resident Evils creatures.Evil Within monsters have more story to them and usually the design circles around that they are reincarnations of a person from others memory of them. The design usually tells a story, for example how they died and what kind of relationship they had with the person who is imagining them.

Laura

Laura is a fast spider-like creature featuring very long nails and it can warp from place to place and it’s honestly for me one of the creepiest encounters. Just it being able to crawl and be anywhere is terrifying, she is kinda cute though.

Anima

Anima on the other hand is more ghost like and the movement is unpredictable. She is slow but can rush to you very fast. She constantly sings an eerie version of Clair de Lune. I tried to play the parts where she appears but I couldn’t, Laura scenes I could power through but this was unbearable.

Listing through creatures and monsters, made me realize that there are tons of monsters to talk about, but tbh for me the impact made Evil Within and Resident Evil. Usually there are not many paths that horror game makers take when making a creature. There are tons of designs that are uniqe, but in a formula of making horror games they usually are looking kinda the same, with muted colors and many limbs. How many more eyes and legs can you add (Me as an artist smh:" a lot")? What I would say where the problem lies is mainstream, hah, but I reallly feel like the horror is pushed to be more to everyone and playing with safe options. I repeat, that there absolutely is uniqueness within the genre and indie companies make horror more innovative but I guess it's a money and marketing issue yet again. I admit that as a consumer I do invest to the big company games more and I feel like I am lazy to check new things but going through a piles of horror games that are slenderman replicas or at the level of granny is frustrating. I do love high quality creatures so that has a big reason too where I can easily loose my immersion if they don't have the big game quality such as the textures makes the designs more disgusting and immersive of the world of spooks.

CHAO GARDEN

Sonic adventure 2 has the best side game on its own: Chao garden! You raise these Chaos´ to race, evolve  and make them go to school, amazing. There is this whole website for the chao island and what you can do there and how you can get different evolutions: https://chao-island.com/info-center/life-cycle/evolution. Essentially, it’s a virtual pet simulator where you can raise your Chaos by giving them items to improve their stats which then influences what they are going to evolve to.

You start by going to the Chao Garden and hatching your Chao from an egg! There are different ways to get the Chao to hatch and the best way is to wait but some meanies tend to smash it to the wall to get the Chao to be born, makes me sad. 

In the kindergarten where the fortune-telling house is you can put your tiny baby to do a kindergarten class and your chao can learn to shake some maracas or draw with crayons, it’s so cute. The only way to give a name to your chao is to go to a chao fortune teller who gives the chao a name, which usually is Bongo, Melody or Elvis. In my opinion It’s forbidden to name your chao to something other than Bongo.

You can raise your baby's stats by playing the main game and collecting items raising stats such as flying, running, swimming etc..It’s pretty annoying when your chaos skill level of swimming is 0 and it’s almost constantly drowning. Anyways, you need the stats to race or prevent the drowning, your choice. Chao racing is one of the main points of the Chao Garden section of the game, you can race other chaos and by winning your chao gets a rosette to show off the superiority of it’s skills. 

Evolution, babyy.. It’s kind of complicated and there are many variations. They are sectioned to normal, hero and dark types and then by stats like a swimming type and then how old the chao is.. fff. WOW, when I started to write this I didn’t realize how much there is to explain. *INHALE* *EXHALE* There are animals which you can give and create little freaks, they can be better because their stat boosts AND the glorious glitch where the chao absorbs almost infinite numbers of animals if you do it right.

What I am trying to say is.. This part of the game is lit and they are cute I am obsessed with Chaos'...

Welcome to my TikTok feed!

It's interesting to see different people's feeds especially on TikTok. You can go to alt TikTok feed or frogs, anime, straight, obscure, cats etc… It is ofc mainly structured what you like and watch the most. I am interested in what kind of feeds other people have because there is so much content and TikTok does a good job of manufacturing the feed to look like yours. I don’t think for example Instagram is doing a good job because there are a lot of things they are trying to sell you constantly. Plus you don’t have to follow anybody on TikTok and still the feed looks like yours, mega plus is that you don’t have to watch some people that used to be in your life such as from high school, I could unfollow them but that feels oddly personal. When I started I got a lot of Finnish videos and I hated it. I didn’t see the charm of the app because it wasn't modified for me yet, but now it’s almost perfect. It features a lot of hunter x hunter memes and animals so be prepared! Here is some videos that I found to best describe my feed:

Before we start, HERE IS THE BUILD FOR THE UNITY PROJECT:

My naming convention is bad and Unity doesn't allow  me to change the name so it's "MPTAKS" in the build and run folder. You can escape the game by pressing alt+f4, moving is wasd and you can look around with the mouse!  If your computer says that the programme is not safe click the more information link and press run.. This is due to the free version of unity games not having a verification certificate. 

My subject started from vaporwave. I didn’t know that it was very popular in the early 2010s, I have seen and heard the genre's works before but I am guessing that I just didn’t connect the dots of it being part of the vaporwave genre. I really like the aesthetic side and my googling ended up me  reading a Thesis by T. Vesalainen long live vaporwave! After reading I continued on reading some articles from the internet such as an article from Esquire How Vaporwave was Created Then Destroyed by the Internet and an article from Eye on Design Vaporwave is Dead, Long Live Vaporwave.

What I gathered from my sources the popularity of vaporwave can be explained by retromania aka the power of nostalgia. I got fascinated how vaporwave only lived because of the internet and “died” with it. I am always up for things that try to take from consumerism and materialism and critique the nightmarish situation that we live in. The thing in vaporwave is that it is so absurd and odd and that is what makes it so compelling to me. Vaporwave is made to not succeed because it doesn’t try to be marketable or profitable because it criticizes capitalism but it battles with nostalgia being one of the most successful and easiest selling points, it doesn’t need anything new to happen. Experimenting and reading about vaporwave got me to the point what I did for my project. The reason I dumped vaporwave as my subject was that it has so many themes and the genre is so broad, I switched to a theme that would be more suitable for my project and is more narrow to deal with. The end result of my project turned out to be from advertising and targeted marketing through that

Advertisement and illusion from it all

The ads that we see nowadays are presented in a way that they are almost too much to handle, they are designed in a way that you are sure to click the ad in question. Advertisements are the illusion of our desires, what we want in that product, picked just for the user that they are being presented to. Trying to sell a new, better, dream like life. Clicks are tried to get through sentimentals, beauty or even gender. Digging through even fragile subjects and using the users fragility as selling points.

Social media is as if it's some type of Ghost reality, where you are presented as something better or at least that’s what we are posting, Life's highlights. Social media platforms are a great way to try to sell the highlight to you back. Selling the things that AI has processed, what kind of echochamber you live in and what are the things that are sure to be sold for that group.

We make our lives public to our followers and the time we are on the internet with all of our pictures uploaded and location data, it’s very likely that the information gathered from our behaviours are to be ended up for targeted marketing. Maybe you want to be like your favourite actor: this is their favourite clothing brand or oh I see you were looking up some jewelry: Suddenly, there are millions of more shops that have jewelry just for you, for a special prize! Oh I see that you have been to Lidl, we know you like it cheap so why not even cheaper, try this Lidl app.  

I get a lot of advertisements for all the newest body shaper apps and as they say how to get your booty poppin’. It’s super weird and annoying, I know I am fine as it is, shut it, Leave my booty to be. I validate my body, thank you very much, don’t you dare to sell me through insecurities or “beauty standards.". It is hard to balance the feeling of, OK If it sells, it’s great marketing, to how you dare to sell me these through a cheap marketing trick? Sometimes I click on an ad for something stupid that I don’t need like a lawn mower and I think to myself “gotcha”, now you think I have a lawn, stupid AI *pfft*. Then I get lawn mower advertisements and I kinda want my personal advertisements back.

MY ACTUAL PROJECT! 

I am not going to lie that it was very hard to decide the path I went to, I felt like my brain was too small and smooth to comprehend anything that I could talk about. I started a project on Unreal and Unity which ended up going to be deleted or they died as my computer crashed, cool. I have long wanted to do a project where I use Blender and a gaming engine and I noticed that I have lost all my knowledge of what to do in Unity. It was really annoying to not have the skills to make the Unity project pretty especially in 3D. I used some ready made assets and code like the mirror at the end where you can see zucky boy and the FPS controller otherwise the assets are made by me.

Let’s get to what my project really is t! What I am trying to convey through the simulation I made is how sensory overload advertisement is. It’s difficult to escape from them. My project can look very meme-like and it is very absurd and too much of everything happening. Social media is a big mess and usually the only thing on the platforms that are really trying to grasp your attention are the advertisements. All the colorfulness and brightness is the mess of our feeds where these ads are there to trick you to buy the illusion and not the actual products. The tactics of advertising are being shoved in your face but at the same time are being sugar coated to be innocent to hide the fact that they are selling ordinary products, nothing special, mass produced that are waiting to be replaced by the new “better” version.

Because these ads are based on Stephens habits and lifestyle and are customised to him. It's very personal, targeting weaknesses but are being brought up to fix that weakness and make you somehow better.

Me and Social Media

This is the story of my struggles of not interacting with social media within 24 hours. I expected  the challenge to be easy since I felt like I don't use social media that much. The hardest part would be to not watch youtube, podcasts and other videos like tutorials. I would say that I watch youtube the most but just a couple of hours (probably much more) a day and I do browse other forms of social media. There is not any specific meaning for browsing so much and the biggest minus is that  my wrists hurt for holding my phone. I don't use Instagram, Snapchat or other social media forms so actively as I used to. I didn’t expect that Whatsapp wouldn't be a problem either.

I don't usually get so many messages anymore. Rarely even from group chats but I am sure that covid has an effect on them. Discord has been more in use when my friends recently made a group there even though I don't speak there much or any other group chats. I just don't want to or I don't have anything to say. I find texting quite boring and can’t get any meaning for it. I texted a lot more before but now I prefer calls or meeting up, the problem here is also that meeting up with this situation: our friend group is used to meeting up with a big group, so that's also off the list.

To the actual CHALLENGE!

I slept a lot. I didn’t have motivation to wake up. Usually I wake myself up by scrolling through some social media feed, now I couldn't so I slept four extra hours, not a good sign. Even while making breakfast I blast some videos from youtube but I couldn't do that either so I decided to listen to Spotify and find some podcasts from there. I chose a podcast from Aalto university but It wasn't the mood I was after. We drew memes with Lenny remembering some golden moments on social media.

I started to watch the social dilemma documentary, I freaked out. The scene where they send messages trying to get a reaction from the voodoo like user, I STARTED TO GET MESSAGES I had to check where the messages came from. It was from whatsapp, and it was quite important and I ordered Lenny to answer them. I lost the challenge but I still tried till the end. At 22.00 I lost it completely and started to use social media normally.

While watching the documentary and trying to be off of social media was the hardest. The beginning of the day I didn’t even have the internet on so I could resist the urge. I needed the internet for spotify and DUOLINGO. To me the funny thing was that I was worried about my streak in duolingo. The one way how the platforms try to keep the users on their platform, but I reasoned that it was more for my motivation to study german. I couldn’t even watch tutorials on youtube and I was really annoyed since I wanted to do my tasks and tutorials are so handy. I tried to search for other forms than tutorials found on Youtube but it didn't really work for me because reading is hard haha, my concentration is way off when reading. I wonder if my concentration is that bad because I am a gen z (baby) or from general concentration problems.

I didn’t enjoy staying off social media platforms since they are tools for me to study and find inspiration. It would have been a completely different situation if I didn’t have school to do then I wouldn't really mind. I could really also dump any other social media form but Youtube is number one. At least number one  tool to learn more, although being without whatsapp would be hard since people do use it the most to contact. It is goofy that I haven’t been able to delete Facebook, Snapchat or Instagram because I have a genuine fear of missing out what's happening but at the same time looking at posts gives me the fomo, but then people do message me through them. It’s a tricky loophole and I have been tricked, I am a sheep.

Cats oh cats

The most important thing to me on the internet is cat memes, not dog memes but kitties. It's not a unpopular opinion and it seems that cats on the internet has been always a trend and  I get it. I haven't always enjoyed cat memes but now that cat memes have perfectly evolved to my taste of humor, (gen Z humor?? ) might be but I am glad that the meme culture has evolved the cat memes from grumpy cat to these golden photos I found in my phone gallery. I think the best thing about these cat memes is the obscurity and absurdity of them all.
